Sucker Rod Running ProceduresSucker Rod Running Procedures

  1. Remove protectors by hand or with approved cap wrench.  Clean face of rod shoulder and face of coupling (must be free of all contaminants, including oil and grease).

NOTE: Never knock off protectors, as this will leave plastic residue in the pin threads.

  2. For new rods, install coupling to hand tight position (Figure 1).  When picking up rods with elevators, “tail” rods by hand to avoid dragging on ground or over other rods.

  3. When stabbing rods, make sure rod and coupling faces are clean of oil, grease, and all debris.

  4. Make up connection to hand tight makeup position and mark rod and coupling as shown in Figure 1.  Loosen (back off) coupling three (3) revolutions.  Engage tongs and set to the level required to reach displacement value for the appropriate rod size and grade (Figure 2).

Sucker Rod Running ProceduresNOTE:  Use TRC Makeup Cards or manufacturer recommended displacement values.

  5. Verify proper displacement value on first five (5) rod connections of each size.  Perform periodic verification throughout each section of the rod string to assure tong consistency.

NOTE:  If tongs are not used (made up by hand), each connection displacement value must be verified.

  6. For reruns of single rods, all threads and couplings must be cleaned and re-lubricated (use TRC thread compound) while ensuring all faces of rods and couplings are clean.

  7. For reruns of standard rods (double or triples), mark several engaged connections (Figure 1) and use tongs to verify makeup position.  If any mark moves, the connection is not made up properly.  Loosen (back off) each connection and verify makeup with tongs and displacement cards.

  8. Visually inspect each connection during makeup for possible problems.
